New member here, thank goodness I found this site!!!! I'm fairly new to yote hunting and have been using the Predator Quest caller lately. Last year I purchased the Howler Pack, 3 calls (Alpha Male, Female, Pup calls) but can not figure out how to use them. I have tried everyway I know of and I can't make them sound like a howl. Anyone use this pack that could give me some advice? Thanks in advance, Mike

Mike,
I can sure try to help. I am not familiar with the Pred. Quest call so I am not sure how they compare.
When I see people use the Howler calls from Quaker Boy the first problem most people have is to much pressure on the reed. They are thin reads so they take very little pressure to use. Try placing your upper lip toward the back of the reed and blowing steadily and changing the pressure you are using on the read as you blow to find the sound you are looking for.
It is very hard for me to explain the use on the forum here. You can call me if you would like to I can having you using that call like a pro in minutes over the phone.
Feel free to give me a call.

Are you talking about the Ruffidawg calls? If so those calls I believe Les said on the "Talk Shoe" with Brian Downs that he uses his calls upside down, which would mean that those calls were probably designed to be used opposite of the way most people use Open Reed Calls. I am waiting for my Howler Pack in the Mail but Dave helped develop those calls and it is def worth the phone call, he is a wealth of information and a very cool guy! Call him up, I did about the Super Screamer and he gave me live demos over the phone and explained what he was doing with his mouth and tongue that created the sounds! He can make the Super Screamer sound just like a wounded Bird! I am still working on that one..Great little trick using your tongue like a purr but I have to do it with my uvula because I just can't get my tongue to roll like that when blowing through the Screamer!
The Howler Pack is really cool from what I have heard and can't wait to get mine! If you really want to have a great lanyard for all of your calls you should check out his link under his Signature...He makes custom Lanyards..with his son I believe and they are staggered so that your calls don't hit up against each other so you not only protect your calls but you are a lot quieter going into the woods. They are great for all hunting calls....And my favorite which I have not ordered yet is the Tote for carrying game out of the woods...Comes with real Deer Antlers (Sections of them) and a Great Design, looks real light weight! I def want one, it has been hard to choose which lanyard is right for me..I have so many calls for predator hunting alone so do I want them all on my neck or do I want a couple sets for certain purposes or a mix set!....I guess there are worst decisions that have to be made!
As far as Howling goes with all of my Howlers, and this may or may not apply to the Howler Pack, I place my lips or teeth at the front of the reed near the sound tube and give a good blow from my diaphram and slide my teeth or lips (Whichever I am using) away from the sound tube slightly and hold it at the pitch that I like and than end by sliding my teeth back to the sound tube and fading out. I also tilt my head back slightly like the dogs do it to add some more realism. This is just one type of howl, if you do a little research you will find there are all kinds of different howls that mean different things. Here is a link to the newest "Talk Shoe" with Brian Downs that is all about Howling, it is episode 26, just click listen and turn up the speakers or plug in your headphones!

Anyways Best of Luck out there! By the way how did the Ruffidawg calls work for you? I heard they were really cheap feeling and sounded like crap, but on the other hand Les really makes them sing on Predator Quest!

Hope something in here helps you!:D

The Howler Pack also has the versitality in different meaning per call. For example, the alfa call is just that. You can use it in mating season, as dominance, territorial or to add realism to a serrinade and long distance communications. The female call is more of a subtile call that is highly effective Jan.- March. It can be used as a female invitation for mating season, territorial, and to draw younger ones or other females in. The young pup call can be used as a lonely lost pup to draw in others [ speacialy females ] or as a territorial call [ something about a lone young vulnerable dog that brings in doulbles and tripples and always in the lead is the alfa male ]. Quaker Boy has quite simply took the guess work out of figuring out where to put your lips or tounge to make it sound like a female or male or younger yote. These calls also save you energy and breath. You don't have to blow as hard. Hope this can help you further. Some good stuff us guys have for people if they just ask like you did ! Good Luck and Be Safe !

If you haven't tried the Killar Pipes and/or the Screamin' Cottontail give them a shot. They are dynamite calls and easy to use.

I had 2 hours of Fun using all three of the Howlers from the Howler Pack Last night. You can get some really great sounds out of these 3 Calls, but they do Operate a little different than most open reed calls. Make sure that you place your lips all the way to the front of the Reed as Instructed or you will not get the best sounds, I believe Quaker Boy and Pro Staff Member Dave did this to help the New Callers make the Correct Pitches on these Calls (Just My Opinion...Well more of a Guess). The Pup Howler and Female Howler do allow a little fluctuation on the Open Reed Calls with the Pup Howler being the most flexible due to the size of the Reed on the Soundboard.
First off, most open reed calls will allow you to use the soundboard all the way to the tip- these calls require correct mouth and lip location for the most part. You can use most of the Reed on the Pup Howler no problem due to the size of the reed and it can also be done quite easily for the Female Howler. However the Alpha Howler requires accurate mouth and lip placement (Sometimes even some pressure from your Teeth) for it to Perform at its Best. Incorrect Placement can make some awful sounding "Cracks" in the sound as well as make you sound like a Moose crossed with an Elk...Just make sure you have your lips pressed up against the "lip" that is raised up on the Cone where it meets the Reed and Control your Air Pressure- These Calls do not Need a lot of air. This is Great for those long Interrogation Howls but an experienced howler should already know to use their Diaphragm when calling so they don't run out of air- or at least not as quick! This is another feature that Quaker Boy and Dave developed to help the New Caller be more Successful at using these Calls (IMO and Guessing Again).
The Alpha Howler does Make a Great Deep Raspy Bark that will drive all the big Dogs Nuts.
If there were no Time Factors Last night there would be a Nice Photo to go along with this Post as I had 5 Different Packs Responding to my Alpha Challenge Howls mixed with Female Invitations. I even through in a few Ki-Yis that I did on the Pup Howler. After 2 Great Hours of Communicating I had One Alpha Male that Started Out about 3/4 of a mile or so away come all the way in to less than 250 yards. He was still Deep in the Safety of Thick Pines and at the rate that he was coming in I knew it would have taken at least another 1/2 of an hour just to get him close enough to see him, so with time not on my side I had to make the tough decision to Head Out.
I should have stayed but at least I got in some good time with these howlers and found them to be very nice sounding calls.
For Anyone who is Interested in Buying these Calls I can tell you this: There are Way More Pros than there are Cons. I highly Recommend this Pack and found it to be a Great Addition to my Collection of Predator Calls!

I was able to get out for a day and call some coyotes with the Howler Pack and the Super Screamer. I also am wearing the NEW outline buster I just got in my prostaff delivery. It was very easy to use. Seemed to work well.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v476/Varmint05/P2050010.jpg

Great Work Dave!
You helped to Develop the Howler Pack so I would like to ask you a question. I left the pup and female calls in my hunting jacket and when I pulled them out they did not work. My Alpha Howler was doing the same thing when I pulled that out of my backpack. I ended up pulling the soundboard, reed, and the "lip" upper piece out. I cleaned them up and reinserted them into the tube. The Pup came right back, the female came back OK, and the Alpha still won't make any sound.
Do you know how to fix this Problem? It happened with the Alpha Call in the Field a couple of times as the Reed had slid to one side or the other between howls which inhibited sound and I had to take my glove off to rearrange it. Do you have an Easy fix or Tip that could Help me Out?
Thanks in Advance Dave (Or Anyone Else)!

You may have to turn the reed over. Give that a try first then you may have to move the reed in or out to get the sound you are looking for.

Many Thanks David, I will try that when I get home. Thought it was strange that they just stopped working but the reed material is pretty thin so I will make sure not to beat on it as I tend to do with my Hunting Gear.

The upside of having such a thin reed is the ease of use. You will not find an easier howler to use. The downside is they do have to be taken care of. You can't get away with just throwing them in a bag. Leave them on a lanyard, and hang it up someplace after using it.
