I'm wondering what everyone's favorite boxcalls are. I don't even use boxcalls very much, but I did have a hunt this spring where the birds wouldn't respond to my soft yelps and clucks with my slate, but as soon as my dad yelped on his boxcall a gobbler responded and we ended up having a jake and a nice 3 year old tom come right to us. Any boxcall recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also, do custom boxes have a lot better sound to them?

I never go into the field without my boxcalls with me, the are great for getting a bird to gobble. I recommend the Quaker Boy Grand Old Master, or a Boat Paddle call(The Curve). As far as custom calls go the only thing that makes them custom is they are painted up pretty and they aren't mass produced. Hope this was some help to you.

BuckNBeardHunter-
Thanks for the information! I don't need my calls to look pretty, so if that's the only benefit of a custom call, I'll save my money and look into one of the calls you mentioned.
Hello, My name is Rick and I'm from Western New York. I just read you messages and just wanted to say there are two types of turkey calls that I take to the field now days. The first is my old box call and the second one is one that was given to me by a friend who makes them. It's called "Toney's Turkey Talker" Its a box call. They were built and market back in 1967 until 1990 until both died.
My friends grandfather and grate grandfather worked on these calls until they were perfect. The only thing that these call can not do is to perform a gobbler call. Other wise it can do anything else that ther call can do.
It's new and fits in your hand but its worth looking into. The sound is great.
This call may be smaller but it does call in turkey. We have proof of that.

Quaker Boy Grand Old Master -- I hardly ever go afield without mine. Been doing so since 1984.

I've had a few, but my favorite is a Primos Heartbreaker.
I never go without it. I don't usually start out with it, but it is a go to call that'll reach out and make 'em gobble sometimes when nothing else will.
I have also found that if you get one you really like, the more you use it and the more you chalk it, it just gets better and better. It's like they get wore in.
