I use Rem 7600 pumps in 30-06 and 35 whelen. I almost never hunt from stands,I' track in the snow in Pennsylvania and we do drives when there is no snow. I have never shot a buck standing still. The first clip is to get the brush out of the way,the second is where the kills come from! (kids don't try this at home.) All kidding aside, fast follow up shots are nice to have when in the big woods where it goes down fast.

I was discussing this recently on another forum.

For practicality, I prefer a bolt action. However, my favorites are usually lever guns due to the exposed hammer. Then you have pumps. You can't beat them for speed (except with an auto, of course.)

Bottom line: If I had to engineer my own favorite deer rifle, it would be a pump with an exposed hammer. Think of an 1897 Winchester shotgun in 300 Savage with a box magazine.

Love my bolt guns for accuracy, but also like my lever guns for the thick stuff. Semi-auto's are nice for getting off a quick follow up shot if necessary. I'd hate to have to chose only one action type.

I like bolt action because of accuracy and reliability. I had an auto that would sometimes jam. Bolt isn't as fast but you know what you've got and it's dead on accurate.

I carry a Browning A-Bolt 30-06. It's a meat stick.

How popular are the Remington pump rifles in your neck of the woods,Spurcollector? I always wondered about that!

One of my friends has a Remington Pump rifle. I wouldn't say they're really all that popular here, but we see one every now and then. They're good guns and I'm surprised we don't see more.

Thanks for introducing me to this forum TrophyTracker, I think I'm going to like it here.
