Just curious how many of you use the 1-1/2oz 2-3/4in. magnum loads for turkey? I used them in the past to take some turkey in Washington State...and they worked fine at 40 yards. They save your shoulder...that's for sure.:)

I shoot them sometimes in my patterning sessions that include a new or untried choke tube,as sometimes they will surprise you and actually test better in the same gun because of the velocity difference and wad intregity
and concentrics. I like to exhaust every option to find the maximum.

Sometimes less is more!

I have a Rem. 1100 with a hastings barrel and hasting Xfull turkey choke(not sure of the exact constriction) at 45 yards it will maul a turkeys head!! And Yes its only a 2 3/4" chamber. I shoot winchester double x supremes. 1 5/8 oz of sixes....ITS DEADLY!!!!

Yes....with the modern buffers, wads and other shotshell improvements over the years, it just makes sense....I just don't think it is always necessary to
launch 2 ounes of shot at a bird to do the trick.

For over 10 years, I shot Remington 2.75" Buffered Magnums in #4. I never felt under gunned. Out of a Rem 1100 with a trap barrel ,they worked fine. That was before super-full screw-ins came on the market. Forty yards was pushing it, but anything inside 35 was deadly. Inside 25 yards, where the majority of my birds have been taken, it doesn't matter-- 20 GA, 16 GA not. Beyond the standard high-brass 12 GA load, you are beginning to play what-ifs.

For those who regularly take birds at 45 yards: believe me, you could be taking them a lot closer. If they will come in to 45, they'll probably come in to 20 given a bit more time.

I will say this again: I've missed more turkeys close in with a choke that was too tight than from having too broad a pattern further out. Turkey hunting is not like wing-shooting. It lends itself to shooting from odd angles with a screwy cheek weld.

Well, thats why I take the time to pattern my turkey guns to their optimum potential. Doing a good bit of public land hunting they dont always come running in with their tongue hanging out. Sometimes you have to take the longer shot. With my other set up a winchester 1300 turkey gun with the forcing cone lenthened and an Undertaker Tube with 3" 1 7/8 oz of winchester extended range I will smoke him at 50 all day, every day...... If I can watch him and let him do his "thing" I will, but if he plays hardball I just reach out and touch his noggin......I personally dont even like to shoot them inside of 35 yards...it doesnt make very pretty pictures.....
