I did some scouting last lear during deer season and into small game season, but when i went out just before spring turkey season and scouted, the birds i found then were'nt there any more. had to go find new roost..

I'm no expert but I think this question depends a lot on the area that you hunt. I know that the birds in my area tend to change their patterns several times throughout the season (very annoying).

In my experiences the turkeys tend to follow the food sources especially in the late fall and winter. When spring hits they tend to split up because there is food everywhere. Try to find a flock of hens and the gobblers wont be far behind when the spring mating season starts. Also use past years experiences to find the gobblers, if they were in a certain spot last year, odds are that they will be around the same area this year.

Or could have simply been a fall flock. By the spring when the mating picks up those same turkeys could be broken up into several different flocks and scattered about as well....
