Western NY was under a lot of rain this past Saturday and Sunday was snowy and very windy.
I got my story here from Saturday in the rain:
Shot 'em both with the Arisaki rifle ("jap gun" from WW2) calibered in 257 Roberts caliber . It's from WW2 a serviceman brought back because the mum is intact. The decommisioned and then surrendered Arisaki's have the mum grinded off. Got it from a buddy who needed it put to good use. I now am calling this gun, "Bob".
I shot a spike buck and thought I missed because he didn't react except to lope off, flicked his tail twice. So I sat down and finished my sandwich. I went to track him and there was no blood at all to be found. I was like "What the buck, man?"
Then I went for a stroll and saw a doe standing there right on the trail. I got the gun up and cranked one right into her. SAME EFFECT, she just turned and loped off like reacting just from the sound. No bucking, no tucked tail and no digging hard to run away. Also, again, no blood.
At this point I think the previous night's drunks messed with my scope. So, I was walking back to the house to sight in the gun again and low and behold, there's the doe on the trail only 20 steps from where I shot her. No blood. I'm flippin her around and the hole was right where I aimed about the size of a pea. No exit wound. The bullet was stuck on the other side rib.
So now I'm thinking that buck is down somewhere, too. I get the doe cut up and lay her by the trail down to the house.
I go back to where I shot the spike and get down on my knees to see what he saw. Sure as shit, there's the hole in the thicket where the deer trail is going through. I go through and inside the thicket is deer highway. I go down the trail about 20 steps and there he is. Same size hole with an exit wound. But no blood on the trail.
2 bullets, 2 deer. Gonna reload this brass with a bit more powder for next year. Save this load for varmints.
SO I stacked my meat and went home. Happy and soaking wet. Bagged my first 2 deer with a gun and I'm glad it was BOB.
