What are your favorite decoys to use in your spread for the area that you hunt? Do you use the same species, or do you mix it up and throw some oddballs in there?

I like to throw out some mallards and woodies together. I keep the black ducks off by themselves, when hunting over water. I will mix the puddle ducks in with the geese when hunting over corn. And don't forget the spinny wing!

I use blacks & mallards. If I am hunting a large pool or more open water, I will put out a dozen bluebills or redheads up wind from my location, just to draw attention. If hunting geese, I never use more than 6-7 floaters and finish up with a large spread of duck decoys. Jim

In the areas I hunt, I am likely to see Mallards, Widgeon, Gadwall, GW Teal, Spoonies, Redheads, Ringnecks, and Bufflehead.

My decoy bag has Widgeon and Mallard decoys. I usually put 2 swan decoys in my spread while I am hunting duck too. These seem to add some confidence in the ducks.

Here is a picture of my favorite decoy, it is a GW teal model that my 2 year old son painted for me. This decoy always makes it in the spread :)

I usually hunt with the same group of friends throughout the year. They carry GW teal decoys in their bag too.

Here are a couple pics of a place I hunt over big water. Mix of divers, mallards & blacks. When geese are in season those new Dakota floaters do the trick. Jim

That seems so weird to me that you can hunt so close to the houses?

I'm sure the residents are less than thrilled to be woke up that way, but I'm pretty sure they are beyond legal at that spot. 150 yds from an occupied building is the minimum where I hunt ducks.

One of my best mallard and wood duck spots is only 175 yds from a day care center:eek: The coolest thing is, the kids that go there are from NYC and NJ, and haven't been exposed to anything like that, so they all run to the fence and cheer when the blasting starts:D I'm thinking about going there as a special guest and teaching them about wildlife and management one day..

The houses are much further away than they look. That is a very busy area. On the other side of the lake where that picture was taken, is the Oak Orchard River dam, well known and popular trout and salmon fishing area. Residents in the area are used to a lot of noise including the shooting. Some are just seasonal which also helps. Jim

I hunt timber a majority of the time and magnum size mallards seem to work the best for us

Cannot wait to set out my new Dakota mallards. They are made as tough as the Dakota goose decoys and are realistic. I will be setting them out when doing seminars and running my recently developed retriever contest next month.
If I hunt water for geese in Sept., will put them out with the goose decoys. Will post pictures the first time I put them out. Jim
