Some of you, like me, hunt in places where snakes like to put a damper on your hunt. After a run in with an angry Water Moccasin this morning in rainy day, it made me think about snake boots. I left mine at home because mine claimed to be 100% waterproof, but would leave my feet soaked after just walking through wet grass. I never wanted to find out if they were 100% snake-bite proof like they claimed as well.

Do any of you have a pair or brand of snake boots that have let you down? Do you have a brand or style that you love and would trust your life to?

Got back to the truck and found a 3 1/2 ft. cottonmouth crossing the road this morning....My friend shot it w/ a 3 1/2 supreme 5 shot. Nasty jokers

After today, I might be more interested in snake boots myself

Sam I put a couple of pics of it on my Myspace in the "View from the trail" album. They were taken after I got him under control and calmed down:D

Chad,

I have a pair of LaCrosse Alpha Venom Snake Boots that are great! They are made of rubber and are camoed in Mossy Oak Breakup. I like 'em a lot.

I might check those out. I don't like leather/Gortex at all.

Chad,

I don't if LaCrosse still makes the model I have, but if you go their website you might be able to see what they make. I like the "Fang" 18" side zip boot they make in MO Treestand.

I have a pair of Rocky's that I bought last year and they worked great, but this year the repellency (if thats a word) does not work anymore and soaked my feet everytime that I went this year. I think I am going back to rubber boots.

Money is kinda tight this year for us and my boots are faling apart. The rubber soles on the bottom are falling off. I was thinking of trying to glue them back together to get me by for another year. I was wondering if anyone could recomend a good glue to use. I was thinking of trying out shoe goo or some gorilla glue. Anyone had any luck with shoe goo? Ive never tried it.

Shoe Goo is pretty tough stuff. It will get the job done in a pinch. What size shoe do you wear?

The boots i got now are 11.5 but they are a little big. Im gonna get some shoe goo this weekend and get them patched up. They should be fine for another season.

I might be coming into some money here pretty soon. I was wondering if anyone has tried the redhead bayou snake proof boots (http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_58009____SearchResults) with the side zip, they look pimpin to me and the reviews said they were comfortable.

Also im looking at some new "rubber" snake proof boots by redhead (http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10202003____SearchResults) that are only 80 bones. My main concern is the rubber soles coming off the boots after a while and getting some leakage. Can this still happen with rubber boots?

Just how long should a good pair of snake boots last? I mean lets be realistic here. Shoes cant last forever. I got about 3 years out of my old pair, which started leaking after the first deer season. Does rubber last longer than leather/gortex? WE NEED ANSWERS!

Sam,

The boots I described in the very first post here, are The Bayou side zip's from BPS:eek:

The Rubber s/b's at BPS are not the lightest for someone who walks a lot, but I believe they will get the job done! I have checked them out over the last couple of years.

These are what I wear. With a liner sock on, with my pants pulled down over them, and covered by a pair of wool 17" snake boot socks, they become ALMOST impossible for the short teeth of a cottonmouth to get through. The rubber shields on the front and back definately help. These are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn as well. Any of you guys who know me, know that I cover many miles in The Grind, and these boots leave me feeling fresh and ready for battle just as much on the way back to the truck, as I was on the way in to the swamp.

Sam,

My Father bought a pair of those Redhead Bayou zip snake boots like 3-4 years ago..He stated that they were comfortable...He only hunts with me like 2-3 times during turkey season every year, so the boots are used very little so cant give ya a report on their durability. My other buddy has a pair of the regular lace-up Redhead snake boots for the past 5 years w/ no issues. I have read ppl. having issues with those boots leaking, but BPS will take them back, so you can get a new pair every year!! LOL....I have also been looking at snake boots and I will probably go with the Redhead snakeboot because of the ability to return them and the price....will get mine after x-mas probably and be ready for gobbler season. On a side note, these rubber Lacrosse Alpha Burly Sport boots I have had for the past 3 years have been bulletproof and they have been thru hell and back, but they are not snakeproof. Let us know what direction you go in....

I still have my Bayou's, but I have to coat them with heavy sillicone a day before going out.

From what i read you do get the year warranty, but its just that, you only get one year to put them through hell. The year dont start over for each pair. Im not positive on that, but from the reviews i read thats the way it sounded.

Its a tough choice. Ive read a lot of reviews on the rubber boots and a lot of people say holes get punched in them from sticks while walking around. I dunno if thats the case for all rubber boots. Im sure some are better than others. Those alpha lites look pretty rugged.

The reviews for the leather snake boots state that they start leaking after only a season or two with some boots being better than others.

Im leaning towards the bayous. If i return them before a years up and the next pair lasts two years that will give me three years. I dont think 3 years is to bad, id be satisfied with that.

Chad, I read the bayous run a size small. Did you buy a size larger than your normal tennis shoes?

The season hasnt even started and im already one up. Had to take care of my pig today. She wouldnt stay in the pen.

I always get one size over on knee boots b/c I put my pant legs inside, so that means I wear two pairs of socks, with one being a thin liner, ant the other being wool. Even in Florida's Spring heat.

I have never tore through a pair of rubber boots or rubber/neoprene boots. This includes hunting pheasants and grouse in the briar patches of the North, as well as bashing around the swamps of the South. Good luck with your choice.

I know that I myself would never buy another pair of Redhead Bayou's. The main thing that I hate is that weird feeling you get when the water goes through the leather, and zipper, and gets trapped up against the Gore-Tex. It's like tying shopping bags around your feet, and standing in the tub. This is pretty normal for Gore Tex/leather boots.

I like the idea of having a zipper on the side of my boots for easy on and off. I play hell trying to get my old boots off. I respect your opinion as a hunter, you have more experience than i do. For you to feel that strongly about the bayous then there must be good reasons. I will pass on them and try another boot out.

I just picked these up at Bass Pro yesterday. They are very comfortable, and only run $99. They are a vast improvement over my Bayous
