My son shot 3 deer this year a spike and two does..he is ten. This is his first season hunting with his rifle. A scoped 30-30. I shot a small eight point and a spike with my .44 revolver...first pistol kill. I shot the spike for a doe. His horns were actually broke all the down to the hairline. At any rate we love to eat venison so five deer for the freezer has been great!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on all the deer!

I also had a pretty good season, with the exception of most of archery. On the opening day of gun season I took a mid size 9 point and a doe later in the afternoon. Both deer were taken with my omega muzzleloader :)

I ended up with 8 in total. Won't change unless I get out tonight or tomorrow as our season doesn't end until tomorrow. I took 7 with my Switchback XT down here (2 does, 5 bucks) and a pretty good 9 pointer in Ga with my trusty Encore! We will make it through the winter......again!

Where are you hunting at? That is a great season...Contrats on those that had a sucessful season

Northeast Florida.

How does your state issue tags. Do you have to fill one to get another, or do you purchase all at one time.

Starting every July 1st in Pa, you have to purchase your new hunting license. with that license you can harves one antlered deer, one fall turkey and one spring gobbler tag. In order to hunt archery or muzzleloader you have to puchase the appropriate stamps. Your license comes with a bear tag but you have to purchase the appropriate stamp for that. you used to have to purchase doe licenses based on the county you wanted to hunt in. When the state changed the game laws in 2002 they created WMU's (wildlife management units) and in these units they allotted a number of doe tags. You can harvest as many does as you have tags for. they also created a minimum number of points the buck had to have to be considered a legal deer. In most of Pa the buck have to have at least three points on one side, each being one a minimum of one inch long. Some WMU's require that the buck have at least 4 points on one side. Ever since they have inititated this policy the hunters of pennsylvania have disliked it. it was not until the last couple of years could you really see the difference this policy has made. The only complaint that hunters have is that they are not seeing the number of deer that they have before the change in the laws. all in all I believe that the quality of deer have increased.

I wish New York would do this for my WMU.

No reason why Pa. won't start spitting out some bruisers with the new antler restrictions? Ohio has been doing it (spitting out bruisers) for years. At my stage of deer hunting I will take fewer sightings and bigger bucks anyday...........but I have two small kids that are going to be hunting in the next few years and they would probably lean the other way?

On www.huntingpa.com forums, there are a lot of really nice, mature, buck that have were harvested this past year. I don't think that there were too many pope and young but they are a lot nicer than years past.

Where I spent my season, it hardly ever snowed. You FLA guys probably no snow either. HA The snow makes it nice to see deer coming through the vertical leafless trees.
But, it was my second deer season. The first one I was actually ready for. I missed a buck with my shotgun. I need to shoot that thing a lot more before May. I saw loads of deer during bow season but none came close enough except this little bugger that I drew on to see if he (she?) would notice. So, I passed on it to let it grow and exactly 8 days later she was piled up next to the road. That sucked to see her mangled after I watched her for a couple days walk down the same path every day.

My region of Ontario had a great deer season. I bagged a nice 10 point buck that I called in with a grunter. It practically sneaked up on me! I still had the gun across my knees, & thought sure he was going to see me raise the gun. I waited until he looked the other way, then I took a perfect broadside shot from about 10 yrds with my scoped 6.5x55. He only ran about 5 yrds before collapsing.

Ontario is also broken up into "wildlife management units" WMU's. Different areas have larger deer populations. We are allowed 1 antlered deer with our deer licence. We also have a doe draw system where your antlered tag can be used for a doe instead. In some WMU's you can buy up to 5 extra tags for $35 each. Gun season is usually only 1 week but the last few years they have extended it to 2 weeks. Bow & mussel loaders get about 1 month which begins before gun season & extents past it.
