On Sunday, I will be running another C.R.H.C., (companion retriever hunting contest). The first one had 19 dogs entered. When I do seminars at Erie, Pa, Hamburg, NY and Cleveland, Oh. in March, plans are to run one contest during the 3-4 day show. Will not be doing seminars that particular day, but will be available for help and to represent my sponsors. Consider signing up and running your retriever. It's a good time. Nothing like field trials or customary hunt tests. Scored completely different. This activity is for the guy that wants to have fun with his four legged hunting buddy. If you want to sign up, get in touch and I will see that you get a registration form. Here are the rules for qualifying to run. Jim
The Companion Retriever Hunting Contest
(C.R.H.C.)
An activity with the focus on the typical owner/handler of a retriever that is a family companion as well as a hunting partner. Designed to encourage having fun and understanding exactly what you want of your retriever and not based on obtaining the traditional hunt test/field trial titles!
1. No professional dog trainers allowed to handle dogs.
2. Dogs currently holding any Hunt Test or Field Trial Titles are not eligible. All other titles are acceptable.
3. Retrievers or Retriever mix breeds only.
4. Actual hunting scenarios for both field and water hunting when the venue permits both.
5. Test will be set up and explained by Jim Beverly
6. Scoring will take into consideration all phases of the hunt including the dog/handler relationship.
7. Handlers must be at least 12 yrs old to participate and be willing to use their waterfowl calls and handle & fire popper loads in a 12 ga. Shotgun. Primers or other means of producing the sound of the gun will be used depending on the venue. There will be NO gunfire at the bird launch location. A short goose or duck call will be blown to simulate an incoming bird or birds.
8. There will be two levels. Level 1 and 2. Level one will consist of single retrieves in an actual goose and duck hunting scenario. Level 2 will consist of more difficult scenarios, but again, real hunting situations.
9. Judging will be done by Jim Beverly
10. Each participant will be assigned a number in each level. Score sheets will be given to a person chosen by the sponsoring organization or group to tabulate totals.
11. Contest scenario will be shown prior to running but not until after everyone has registered. Each handler must decide which level to enter based on just the information in #8.
12. Registration fees (if any) and prizes for 1,2, & 3rd will be decided by sponsoring organization or group.
13. Participants will be encouraged to treat the contest as though they were actually on a hunt.
14. Dakota goose and duck decoys will be used. Final Approach layout blinds and mutt hut will be used unless the handler does not use a layout blind or mutt hut. ComoFlex Systems will be used for duck blind, bird boy concealment and added props where needed. DTSystem bumpers and in some cases, bird launchers will be used.
15. A DVD will be available for anyone wishing to purchase a copy of the contest.
