I'm not above taking a poke out there if that is the hand I am dealt. I look at some of the other forums, and the oldtimers are reading The Riot Act over shooting past 50yds with anything, gun, bow, you name it. If you have the ability, practice, and desire, then I say go for it! I don't take as much crap for my long range shots as I do for my famous running ones:D What can I say, I like action!:o

I spent 9 years in the Army, I was in the Infantry so we shot allot. I could nock down those 300 yard pop ups with Iron sights all day long.
Well I started deer hunting with a friend, I knew allot about weapons, but not hunting weapons, so there he was about 400 yards following a doe, but when I looked through the scope he was just to small to even put the cross hairs on, so later that evening when I told my hunting partner about the buck, he said"why didnt you turn the power way up, you have it set on 1."
I said, oh, you can turn it up?

465 yards on a whitetail doe. Gun was a Browning BAR in .30-06 Springfield. It was just a freak of a rifle and would punch itty bitty groups with anything you fed it from cheap-o Wal-Mart fodder to handloads. I had shot the rifle all summer practicing longer shots out to 400 yards. I had made a come up chart along the way and taped it to my scope. This way I had a really good idea of how many clicks I needed to be on target at various ranges. I killed the doe in question in front of about 6 other members of my club. They actually called me on the CB radio and said I couldn't kill her. It was doe weekend BTW, before it was an entire week or 9 days, whatever it is now. I couldn't stand it so I drove to the spot and there was the doe way across a bedded up cutdown. She paid us no mind at all, I think there were three trucks there. I threw a jacket on the dog box, laid Betsy up there, did a little clicking, guessed on the wind and cracked off a shot. With the recoil of the rifle I had no idea of the outcome until I heard the expletives start up. She never took a step, due in part to the fact that I hit her at the base of her neck as opposed to behind the shoulder where I was holding. None the less I was the man for that day.

The biggest buck I've ever taken was killed at a lasered 297 yards with a custom barrel .270 Winchester Encore launching handloaded 130 Hornady SST's. Son of a gun was tending a doe in a narrow lane and wouldn't turn broadside for anything in the world. For probably 5 minutes he stood there and watched the doe feed. Fearing he would simply take two steps and be gone forever I centered the cross hairs a little high in his brisket and let one rip. Wheels up on the spot. He scored 142 7/8's gross B/C.

With a bow my longest is 52 yards but it wasn't nearly as cool as it sounds. I gut shot the deer seconds earlier at 17 yards. Luckily she stopped in some short pines and I had time to range her, get another arrow nocked and make the shot. I actually pinwheeled her from 52 and she went another 30 yards and was DRT. I've taken a few from 40'ish but most are up close and personal. I killed two eight pointers last year with my bow, one from 42 yards and one from about 13. The close one was out of a blind and was rocking!
The Browning BAR is such an accurate semi-auto rifle! Love that gun! Great Shooting DaddyPaul!:)
