What would be the best call this time of year in the North East for Coyote? I was thinking Cottontail? Any Suggestions? Does anyone oppose the electronic calls? Any advice on using them, because I have one that makes like 8 to 10 different calls but don't really have any technique with it. Thinking that getting a Quaker Boy cottontail in distress call would be great. Please any and all advice would be great. Thanks in Advance :)

Any advice would be much appreciated because I am going out Saturday. If I don't get a response I will just have to use my electronic call. I was hoping to get some feedback on Quaker Boy predator calls, especially cotton tail calls and tricks or tips on using them.

There are a couple of jam-up predator hunters on here, I should give one of them a call and tell him to jump in here

Don't know much about the Quaker Boy calls but I would certainly think that a cottontail or fawn distress would be good this time of year. If you use the electronic call try and set up a little way away from it and one of those fuzzy decoys will really help your chances. Remember, good cover is a must because predators are some mighty sharp eyed critters with great noses as well.

I put the word out to our top guys. Sorry it didn't come sooner, but you should be in good position for future hunts!

tyson129, Glad to see you on our Quaker Boy forum and glad to see you are interested in predator hunting and our predator hunting calls. It's great that you are showing respect for the sport and other predator hunters by asking questions. There are too many hunters with too much pride and go out and try to figure it out and get hurt and or educate these coyotes ! Now I must ask are you hunting day time or night time ? Once we find that out we can answere more questions. When it comes to calling this time of year almost any distress call will work. The coyotes are not educated as of yet to the over use of a certain call and the younger yotes are less educated to hunters in general. So with that being said, the yotes likely to show up to your calls will be youngens ! Now as the season progresses the coyotes get educated to hunters and calls. Almost everybody has a wounded rabbit call [ which is a good call] but it gets over used and the yotes get skittish to this call and generally will work wider and farther down wind. So a variety of different distress calls makes a good arsonal ! Decoys are great cause the number 1 sense a coyote uses is sight. If a coyote has a visual he will most the time not need to go down wind and will come straight to the decoy ! Decoys should be used day and night. Coyotes vision is a little poorer than humans but they have way better night vision. They see movement just as good as they do in the day time, plus a decoy takes the yotes attention off the hunters movement if set out properly. E-callers are great to use and when set out properly in the day can add realizem to the set and gives the hunter opportunity to move less and have versitlity with certain calls that are hard to do with hand calls. Be sure to check your states game laws pertaining the use of electronic calls for predator hunting and the use of lights at night also ! At night the e-caller is set up not more than a couple feet away [unless there is a ful moon or a bright night] from the hunter. This is done because the use of lights [red lens]. In order to see the eyes [reflection] the predator must be looking in the direction of the light, so the caller will draw the attention of the predator as they are looking at the source of sound and if the call is anywhere else you won't see there eyes. Our QUAKER BOY CALLS ARE EASY TO OPERATE AND WE HAVE A LARGE VARIETY OF CALLS AND SOUNDS!!! I use Q.B.CALLS not just because I am a Q.B. Pro Staffer, It's because I kill predators every year with them here in upstate New York and if something isn't broke it don't need to be fixed. Our rabbit and fawn distress [black six sided calls] are easy to operate and with some practice are versitile and the caller can make other distressed animal sounds with them as well. We also have distress calls the hunter can squeeze. They are great for the begginer and won't freeze up in the colder months. I hope I helped you along. This sight is full of wisdom and our Q.B. Pro Staffers are experienced in there field of games and will guide you along with there knowledge !

Thanks Dave! I'm terror on animals with feathers, but when it comes to sharp tooth, furbearers, I turn to the two Daves on here. These guys are the real deal.

Thanks darkstorm557 and TrophyTracker, that was very informative! I am hunting during the day at this time of the year, night hunting for coyotes up here in Maine is from January to June. I wish I would have seen your post before I went out on Saturday, but I used an electronic call that I already had and called in a good sized coyote with a rodent squeal and than set it to kitten in distress. About 10 minutes after I used a sequence of kitten in distress in came the coyote. I was out on my bait site for Bear as it was the last day of Bear over bait season so my setup was intended for Bear and I was using a 600 grain Black Magic slug in my Benelli SuperNova with a Carlson's Rifled choke and TruGlo red dot sight. Knowing that if I was to switch out my shell I would spook the coyote because he was within 40 yards I took aim with my red dot sight and BOOM! I caught it all on HD video as I am filming all my hunts this year and it did a clean pass through the vitals. That dog flew up about 3-4 feet in the ear and curled right into a ball, landed and took off into the swamp, into a stream and than into nasty thick swamp on the other side. I spent over an hour trying to find that coyote but never recovered it. I changed up my Benelli with a full choke and have my coyote rounds together for this weekend. I enjoy sharing the outdoors with as many people as I can and this weekend I am going to be calling in Coyotes with my younger brother, this time with a setup that is intended for them and not bear. I will also be stopping by Dicks Sporting Goods where I saw a Quaker Boy cotton tail distress call last week and give that a try.
Thanks again for your help and I hope to get more advice from you in the future. I am defiantly no expert but I sure love hunting predators, especially at close range. I am HOOKED!!!

darkstorm557, Is there any particular decoy that you find most effective or recommend that I pickup this week for this weekend's hunt with my brother? Thanks in advance.

Here is a crap quality version teaser of my video that will be done at the end of the fall and winter seasons from the coyote on Saturday 9-26-2009. Let me know what you think. The final video will be in HD, but for know I did a real quick rip of the video from the camera to the computer and had to compress the crap out of it so it lost 90% of the quality. Hope you enjoy it.:D

Just picked up my first ever Quaker Boy Predator Call. Got the Grey Ghost Series Super Screamer, and I must say that this call has blown away my expectations! It is so lifelike sounding and the variation you can get out of it is amazing! Its soft teeth cushion is very nice but I must say that my mouth is sore today from playing with it the whole way home from the store! HAHA, not a bad thing!
Thanks Quaker Boy for making Superior Products, and thanks to Trophy Tracker for turning me on to them! :D
