Waited a week to hunt this spot my bud and I scouted cause we needed a west wind and that scouting day wasn't it. That following Thursday was that day. My bud didn't get back to me after 7 calls so I was solo. With west wind in my face that early fall evening I walked slowly along to a treestand on the edge of a corn field that had some good sign and climbed up. It was 3:50pm. I waited 40 min. then prepared myself for something I have been anticipating all year. My hand slides to my shirt pocket as I grab my QUAKER BOY mouse squeeker. You see I have been hunting black bear in upstate New York since I was 16 but never started calling them til 5 years ago. I have taken 3 bears so far through out the years, 2 when I was 16 years old and the third back in the late 90's. I start out with the squeeks long and hard for 5 min. straight with the squeeks fainting in volume. [ the Quaker Boy mouse squeeker is easy to control with some practice ]. Then wait 25 min. or so then start calling again. The wind is perfect blowing from the woods [ where I expect the bear to come from ] to the corn field in back of me. I was facing the woods over looking a creekbed 30 yards infront of me that I anticipated the bear to use. After my third call and after me eating a bag of cashews, a bear comes down the creekbed looking like a coyote coming to a call searching for that mouse. He stops and sits down looking in my direction but I was 10 feet high in a stand. 5 min. go by then he gets up and starts to turn to go back torward the woods [ they say bear lose interest quick and sence he was so close I didn't call anymore besides getting ready to shoot, I think he lost interest ], and presents a quartering shot. I raise my CVA WOLF 50 cal. muzzleloader and settle the cross hairs on his back rib cage because of the angle. I descided to take the shot because it was now or never and I was not taking a chance of him not coming back. A cloud of smoke appears and all I can do is listen carefully til I can see again. I heard him running then silence. I reloaded and waited 15 min. got down to look for some blood. If no sign and the bear wasn't visible from that spot I would wait til the next day . I took a look across the creek up in the woods and there he lay. Found him 35 yards away from where I shot him. A total of 65 yards away from my stand. I chose the CVA 50 cal. just for the reason it has great knock down plus it will push through brush if need be at a close range. Such a beautiful highly respected predator ! It was a great hunt my fellow predator hunters and Quaker Boy Staff..... Quaker Boy Game Calls and CVA muzzleloaders helped get the job done !!
