How many of you deer hunters use a .257 Roberts like myself on deer? How many of you think its way too small to hunt deer and I should stick to the Varmints with it? Be honest its not going to make me change my favorite deer gun but I would like to see who else out there is into using this great caliber on Deer and hear from those who think its a poor choice.
Those of you who do use it tell me what your favorite ammo for hunting deer with it is. I am going to start hand loading soon because mine is Ackley Improved and I cant wait to make some Wildcat rounds. But for right now I am using the 117 gr Hornady SST Light Mag with the red ballistic tips.

I don't own one, but my hunting buddy uses his for deer and his killed more with it than I can say. He's used it for years and it does get the job done on whitetails. I don't know what load or bullet he uses but I'll find out.

Thanks for the response, yeah this truly is a great deer gun, I once read that it was considered one of the best white tailed deer guns of all time by some of the legends of our sport. It will be great to hear what your buddy is shooting.
Thanks :)

My friend the sniper has been messin' for me with some handloading and can't find the right combo of powder and bullet. My current accurate loads are 100 gr bullets with 39 gr BL-C-R.
I bought 115 gr Noslers and we have tried various quantities of various powders but they're all over the paper. I'm luckily trading my powders with him because he uses what I bought and has a stash of BL-C-2 he doesn't use. Perfect.
BOB is going to be my varmint gun, going for coyotes this year as they're all over the place. We're limited in NY as to our gun choice for deer, rifle usage is not for deer in my primary hunting grounds, only for coyote, fox, chucks, etc. I got a 30-06 for where I can rifle hunt where I go only on opening weekend. I want to dump em right where they stand. BOB didn't do that for me with the 100 gr bullet and I don't think 39 grains o' powder would be enough at 200+ yards.
Back to my BOB I have no idea the twist in barrel nor it's magnum load it will handle. The load books showed 42 grains powder or so with a 115 bullet. Once I dial in a personalized load that works with the 115's I'll report back as to its effect on the chest cavity of the first unlucky whitetail to cross my path with BOB in hand.
If it puts em down, use it...

Thanks for the story Adamz. I truly love my Bob, and it is so versatile. I in deep thought right now, pondering about the coyote hunt tomorrow morning, Bring in "Bobby Knight" or keep my current setup with my Benelli SuperNova with the Brenneke 3" 600gr Black Magics (Have T Shot for Coyote), praying every second that its the Black Bear I've been chasing for a month and a half instead of a Coyote. Maybe I will bring both, Can't hurt to have too much of a GOOD Thing...or can it.
