On my last trip to deer camp before Christmas, I take home all the deer ammo and all my turkey calls. Right after New Years, I break out the calls and start practicing. My favorite time to practice is in the car on the way to work in the morning. I pop in a CD and have at it. By the time I get back to camp, around March 1, I'm back in the groove.

My biggest bugaboo is that I'm fairly passable as a natural voice caller-- for most of the year. I can cluck, yelp, and purr with just my voice. However, invariably I get a Spring allergy that really screws that all up. By the time season starts, I'm all congested to the point where I can't trust my voice. It does come in handy for one thing. In a tight situation, I can usually cluck unassisted.

I practice with my friction calls on the weekend-- when I can have my hands off the driving wheel. What's fascinating to me is how many birds I can call in. Not turkey's mind you-- We live on the suburban north side of Cincinnati. There are no turkeys around. However, every bird in a mile of the place shows up to check out the sounds. We have a resident pair of red-shouldered hawks in the vicinity, but I've called in as many as four additional hawks at once, as well as every crow, owl, blue-jay, and songbird in the neighborhood.

I am a competition caller and I start practicing wright after gun Deer. I practice as much as I can but with kids and so on Im happy to practice 3 days a week. But when it get a couple a weeks from a contest I try to practice a little every night. Im just not disciplined enough nor have the free time to practice 2-3 hours a day like some of these competition callers do. I also think you can practice to much.

I usually start practicin about a month before the season opens. But it just depends on how good you are and if you still know how next year.

Usually I start practicing a little around Jan. 1st (maybe once a week), by mid Feb. i'm up to 2 or three times a week (I pretty much keep a mouth call in my truck year round), When Mar. rolls around i'm usually so fired up  i'm practicing some kinda call about every day.

Got the calls down the other night and took inventory. Gonna start running some calls in a few weeks and order some fresh mouth calls by the end of January. By the start of February, I will have some mouth calls and a tube call in the truck that I will play when I'm out driving around checking on convicts.

I'm not a competition caller and I don't use mouth calls. But my slates and boxes are never in storage and my wife hates them.

Watching football? Hit mute during the 5 minute commercial break, sand your glass slate and run some purrs. Chalk up the boat paddle, go into the back yard and see if you can make dogs bark at you half a mile away!
